As I have mentioned in the previous post, Sweet Boy although meets the cut-off for local Kindergarten, will not be going to one this year. The reason I give to people who ask is that he will always be the youngest of the class and he is very immature for his age and also a sensitive kid. The other reason I actually do not share with people around me (except on this blog for whole world to see) is that I want him to play a year longer.
I was always a good student, maybe not a perfect 'A' student but never below 'B+' but I detested school as I got older and older. I never had any problem in school, I had great friends and was in good terms with all my teachers. Nevertheless, it didn't stop me from eagerly praying for the day of graduation. I wanted to spend more time drawing, painting, creating and reading. With no official teaching certification nor extensive experience, I am not going to just pull Sweet Boy out of school and homeschool him. However, I want to give him an option to be homeschooled if he ever want to pursuit another dream when he got older. Until then, my smallest goal is to give him another full year to just be a kid.
I registered him at a local preschool/kindergarten where he will be playing most of times in their acres of sand play area, explorer the nature center around them and feed the animals in their school barn. Meanwhile, he will still be learning through play at home. I am spending most of this summer researching and getting ready for the mommy-and-me play/learn time at home; I call it the 'Honeybee Time'.
So here is the Honeybee Time plan:
* Book of the week *
We will be doing mostly a literature based learning this year. I love to read and I want our kids to grow with love for reading as well. I will be using books by Lois Elhert, Rosemary Wells, Ezra Jack Keats, Bill Martin Jr. and any other books Sweet Boy or Happy Girl is interested in at the time. I bought e-books on 'Teaching with favorite ___ books' from Scholastic Dollar sale and these are very inspirational.
*Reading / Writing *
- BOB books
- Reading the Alphabets
- Learn to Read series (We only have two books left on the level 1)
- Evan-Moor everyday Listening
*Math*
- Evan-Moor workbooks
- Gabe (Spielgaben) - I might have mentioned before but I do have teaching certification on this and planning to have lessons with Sweet Boy and Happy Girl separately.
* Social Studies / Science *
- Beginning Geography from Evan-Moor
I am researching and collecting more ideas for hands-on geography lessons.
* Korean *
One of the main goals for this year is to have both Sweet Boy and Happy Girl start learning Korean.
I tried so hard to teach Sweet Boy Korean before English but when we found out that he was losing words because he had fluid in his ears and therefore got a very delayed start on speaking, we decided to just teach him English in hopes of him mastering at least one language right. Which wasn't a hard choice to make because we do live in US and we never even thought of living anywhere but here.
Anyway, long story short, Sweet Boy has caught up with his peers and I think he is ready to learn some basic Korean.
I have ordered bunch of stuff from Korea because I have no idea on how to teach them Korean and it's not all over the Pinterest like teaching English. So we will see how it goes.
With Sweet Boy going to school for 4 mornings a week and Happy Girl starting church nursery school for 2 days a week (I know! I can cry! When did she grow up so quickly?!) I have more time to pull my sanity together. So hopefully my plan will not fall apart by the end of September. Fingers crossed. :)
I also plan on becoming more diligent on blogging.
Yes.
I said it.
I don't think too many, if not any at all, see this blog but it's out there so now I will HAVE to keep my word.
... We will see about that.
